Atlanta, GA, May 20, 2022 – The famous frozen landscape of earth’s coldest continent comes to Atlanta in the new giant screen documentary Antarctica. Narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, is set to open on May 28 in Fernbank Museum’s Giant Screen Theater. This film, which was brought to us by BBC Earth, showcases a tale of discovery, connection and hope just in time to put a chill in the early summertime air. Antarctica immerses viewers in a world of frozen wonder. Shrouded in secrecy that only a landscape that allows for no permanent human habitation can provide, Antarctica has always been a land of mystery – and yet, it impacts everyone on earth. Boasting never-before-seen footage, the story of Antarctica brings audiences to the farthest reaches of this wild and majestic continent.

Accented by the latest in underwater filming techniques, viewers are invited to dive beneath a sheet of unwavering sea ice with more than a 6-foot thickness, to experience a variety of unique animal inhabitants and explore the overall environment that sets Antarctica apart from the rest of the world. Weird and wonderful creatures abound, from hundreds of purple starfish that thrive in cold temperatures, to jellyfish demonstrating their deadly dances, playful but predatory seals, and birds soaring high above snowy mountain peaks.

Additionally, there is captured footage of rarely documented animal interactions, including the largest congregation of great whales ever filmed, thousands of penguin colonies that can be seen from space, a penguin that pecks in the face of a hungry leopard seal, and two clashing, massive elephant seals that allow viewers to witness the true danger of a blubber-on-blubber altercation.

Remote and hostile, beautiful and awe-inspiring, Antarctica plays a complicated role in the world around us. Though known for some of the roughest seas in the world, Antarctica’s Southern Ocean plays a vital role for the entire planet due to its regulation of currents and sea levels. Additionally, the  wildlife-filled waters’ absorb huge amounts of carbon, which helps to “shield against some of the effects of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.” Antarctica explores scientific discoveries that drive home the importance of monitoring the dramatic changes in climate for the snow-and-ice-covered continent, and the overall concerns with the rapidly warming environments’ impact on the world. The film also highlights that it will take global cooperation and collaboration to protect Antarctica and ensure the future health of our planet.

To celebrate the film’s Atlanta opening, Fernbank will provide chances to win free tickets. Hosted on Fernbank’s Instagram account on May 31, a penguin scavenger hunt will be guided by clues on where to find plush penguins and Fernbank tickets hidden around the metro Atlanta region. Antarctica plays daily in Fernbank’s Giant Screen Theater at Fernbank . General admission tickets should be reserved online at FernbankMuseum.com. Tickets include  three floors of exhibits in the natural history museum, choice of one giant screen film, and 75 acres of nature explorations in Fernbank Forest and WildWoods.
