Things New and Strange: A Southerner’s Journey Through the Smithsonian Collections
Sunday, November 17, 2019 4:30 PM — 6:00 PM
Frances Wood Wilson Foundation Theater
Presented by Dr. G. Wayne Clough
Join Dr. G. Wayne Clough, former secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and president of the Georgia Institute of Technology, for a conversation and book signing inspired by his book Things New and Strange: A Southerner’s Journey through the Smithsonian Collections. A book signing will immediately follow the lecture.
After retiring, Clough began investigating what the Smithsonian collections could tell him about South Georgia, where he spent most of his childhood. His investigations revealed animal, plant, fossil and rock specimens, along with cultural artifacts and works of art—far more than he had imagined. He found that the objects illustrated important aspects of southern culture, and how museum archives help intertwine family, community and natural history.
Cost: Free; advance reservations highly recommended at 404.929.6400. Reserved tickets will be available for pick up at the Museum Box Office. Seating for the lecture will begin at 4:15pm.
Program Location: Frances Wood Wilson Foundation Theater
Lecture tickets do not include museum or giant screen film admission.
