Field Trip Programs
Enhance your students’ Fernbank experience with a school program. Fernbank educators use active discussion, fun visuals, live specimens and unique artifacts to engage students.
All programs are correlated with Georgia Standards of Excellence and last 30 to 90 minutes. Programs are available from August–May. Call or register online for your requested date, time and program.
Auditorium Programs (min 10, max 170 per session)
Offered Tues., Thurs. and Fri. at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
Science comes alive with discussion, demonstrations and exciting visuals in our auditorium-style programs! Discover the amazing, dynamic processes of Earth and Life Sciences. Each program lasts 45 minutes and is designed to accommodate large groups.
Investigations (min 10, max 30 per session)
Offered Mon. and Wed. at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
Sharpen your science skills in our inquiry-based investigations. Observe and explore the worlds of Earth and Life Sciences through hands-on activities and experiments. Each investigation lasts 45 minutes. Note: Some investigations are designed for outdoor exploration; please review program summaries for details.
Creature Features (min 10, max 30 per session)

Meet our live teaching animals in an animal encounter. Learn about the incredible adaptations and life histories of our charismatic critters. Each encounter is scheduled for a 30-minute block and includes three animals from our collection of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
Guided Fernbank Forest Tours (min 10, max 40 per session)
Offered by request, Mon. - Fri. at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Gain a better understanding of the interconnected Piedmont forest ecosystem and the importance of biodiversity during this 90-minute interpretive tour of Fernbank Forest. Participants will explore the ecology and characteristics of an old-growth forest while developing a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Guided WildWoods Walk, Grades K-5 (min 10, max 40 per session)
Offered by request, Mon. - Fri. at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Students will gain a better understanding of the interconnected Piedmont Forest ecosystem and the importance of native biodiversity during a guided interpretive tour of Fernbank Wild Woods. During this 45-minute tour, participants will see first-hand the ecology and characteristics of this old-growth forest while developing an appreciation for the natural world.
