Created in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall, Roots & Shoots empowers youth to become changemakers by creating a better world for people, animals and the environment.  Roots & Shoots groups identify important challenges in their community and implement change through service projects.

Fernbank is proud to be the first museum in the world to initiate a Roots & Shoots project. Fernbank educators are leading a group of middle school students in planning and implementing projects around the Fernbank campus, including:

  • Revitalizing Fernbank's Rain Garden. Volunteers removed debris, added new stones and planted native species in an effort to become changemakers and help create a better world.
  • Testing the quality of the waterways in Fernbank Forest and WildWoods. Volunteers tested chemical, physical, and biological features to make sure these spaces are clean and healthy for their natural inhabitants.
