Fernbank partners with Atlanta Public Schools (APS) and the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta to present a high-quality afterschool program that advances science achievement among underserved 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders attending Title 1 APS schools. The partnership allows us to serve our community’s students and teachers with engaging science experiences, and continue to provide equitable access to the Museum for underserved students.
Science Explorers plays a critical role in the community by providing a safe environment for underserved youth and extending the school day with science enrichment education. Instruction, led by Fernbank educators, expands the knowledge that these students glean in their school classrooms by using inquiry-based learning and the scientific method to explore a wide variety of themes. Interactive visits to the Museum showcases demonstrations, hands-on activities and discussions to make learning about science fun and engaging while delivering additional STEM education to elementary school students. Following each afterschool session, participating students receive tickets granting both Museum admission and access to a giant screen film with a goal to increase family involvement in science learning.
