Fernbank Museum Celebrates 20 Years with Events, Exhibits and Major Announcement

ATLANTA—Fernbank Museum of Natural History, one of the highest-attended and most respected museums in the Southeast, will continue its celebratory year this fall with a series of exciting events, exhibitions and technological innovations. Fernbank's 20th anniversary officially takes place on October 5, 2012, coinciding with the opening of two exhibitions. The anniversary celebration continues over the following weeks with a black-tie gala, a family-friendly Museum Anniversary Bash, and the launch of a groundbreaking new Museum app.

Genghis Khan, on view from October 5, 2012 through January 21, 2013, showcases the amazing, true story of Genghis Khan, one of the world's greatest and most misunderstood conquerors. The exhibition immerses visitors in his world of conquest, diplomacy, innovation and destruction. Genghis Khan features one of the largest collections of 13th-century artifacts from the Mongol Empire ever exhibited, many which have never been on display to the public.

Celebrating Fernbank Museum, also on view October 5 through January 21, presents 45 photographs that showcase the Fernbank Museum experience through the work of the Decatur Digital Photography Meetup. The photographers will join Fernbank on October 12 at 6:30 p.m. for a special Meet the Artist event during Martinis & IMAX®, allowing visitors the opportunity to explore the exhibition and talk with the Meetup members.

On October 6, Fernbank will celebrate in grand style with A Timeless Affair 2012: The Emperor's Feast, an annual black tie fundraising gala. This year's event was inspired by Genghis Khan and will include more than 400 guests who support the museum's mission as donors, members, Trustees, sponsors and patrons. A Timeless Affair began more than two decades ago as a fundraiser to support the opening of Fernbank Museum.

Families can enjoy the Museum Anniversary Bash on October 13-14, which includes a variety of programs and activities for all ages during a birthday-themed party that keeps going through the weekend.  Throughout 2012, Fernbank has offered more than 20 family programming days as part of the 20th anniversary celebration.

With several major renovations and permanent additions in the last decade alone, including the opening of the award-winning children's exhibition Fernbank NatureQuest (2011), the addition of a Dinosaur Plaza (2010) at the Museum's entrance, the permanent installation of the world's largest dinosaurs in the Giants of the Mesozoic exhibition (2001), and several other notable benchmarks, Fernbank's first 20 years were marked by growth and acclaim.

As the not-for-profit museum strives to inspire future generations with science, nature, history and culture, Fernbank continues to strengthen the visitor experience. The next phase of Fernbank will include the launch of an innovative mobile application that will enrich how visitors explore, expand learning opportunities and offer new museum experiences. The mobile experience will feature the next-generation of innovations that are leading the way for enhanced visitor engagement and continued experiences beyond the walls of the museum. The free app will be announced in November.

Fernbank Museum is located at 767 Clifton Road, NE in Atlanta. For more information about Fernbank Museum of Natural History, including its history, programming and announcements, visit
