Weekend Wonders Volunteer

Primary Objective
To welcome visitors and to assist children in creating craft projects.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome each family and assess age of child
  • Explain craft activity and help children get involved
  • Encourage child and parent to explore the room
  • Expect and encourage appropriate behavior from the children and gently correct as necessary
  • Monitor the crowd level
  • Answer various questions regarding Museum events, activities, and facilities
  • Know the phone system and how to dial Security 6350
  • Straighten the rooms as needed
Qualifications/ Expectations
Warm, child-friendly personality; desire to interact with children; willingness and ability to sit on the floor; ability to monitor and correct behaviors through use of positive rather than negative terminology; patience; flexibility; comfortable working in a sometimes noisy and busy environment; open to input from certified teachers on Museum staff; adhere to volunteer dress codeTraining

General orientation to Museum; placement interview with education and/or volunteer staff; review of written materials; training session provided by certified teacher on Museum education staff

Time Commitment
One four-hour shift per month. Shifts below are on weekends only.
Saturday: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday: Noon to 4 p.m.
 

Other
For the extraordinary volunteer, an opportunity for promotion exists. Volunteers with great success in the craft activities described above can be promoted to help develop future crafts. This would be in conjunction with the education department of the Museum. Staff may conduct periodic performance reviews.
