Reflections of Culture Docent

Position Summary
To welcome visitors to Fernbank Museum’s newest permanent exhibition Reflections of Culture and assist in the interpretation of the exhibition’s themes.

Responsibilities

  • Attend training sessions and read materials related to the exhibition
  • Welcome visitors to the exhibition
  • Provide visitors with introductory information about the exhibition layout and content
  • Assist visitors with interactive components
  • Answer various questions regarding Museum events, exhibitions and facilities
  • Coordinate flow of school groups with chaperones or Museum security as needed
  • Supervise visitors to be sure there is no running or unruly behavior
  • Assist with exhibition-related projects as needed

Qualifications/Expectations
Seeking docent candidate with a background and/or strong interest in world cultures, anthropology, sociology, art history, material culture studies or other related fields of human study. Ideal docent is customer service-oriented; able to stand for shift duration; comfortable working in a busy environment; appears as scheduled for shift; possesses general knowledge of the Museum; desires to learn the exhibition’s material; comfortable in a facilitator’s role; able to interact with children; adheres to volunteer dress code and follows Museum polices and procedures.

Time Commitment
Must commit to 2, three-hour shifts a month and attend the mandatory training required prior to beginning duties for this position. Training dates to be announced.
