St. Catherines Island: Key to Georgia's
Past
Fernbank Museum is the home to a world-class archaeological
collection, The St. Catherines Island Foundation and
Edward John Noble Foundation Collection. This
collection is the product of 30 years of research led by Dr. David
Hurst Thomas, Curator of North American Archaeology at the American
Museum of Natural History. Artifacts and records from this work
will be used at Fernbank for the creation of new exhibitions and
programs. St. Catherines Island is an unspoiled Georgia barrier
island situated along the Atlantic coast in Liberty County,
Georgia.
The St. Catherines Island research, and the collection produced
by it, is very important. The results are as critical to
understanding world history as they are to filling out the picture
of Georgia's past.
