Archaeology Month Lecture
A Grand, Gloomy and Peculiar Place: Cave Archaeology in the Southeastern U.S.
Dr. George Crothers, University of Kentucky
Tuesday, May 13, at 7 p.m.

Stephen Bishop, a guide in the 19th century, once described Mammoth Cave, Kentucky as “a grand, gloomy and peculiar place.” Caves are indeed grand and gloomy, but it is the discovery of the peculiar that turned caves into spectacles. From prehistoric mummified human remains to historic tuberculosis sanatoriums, scientific findings inside caves can provide unique insights into the past—turning these unworldly environments into wonderful repositories. Join Dr. Crothers to find out more about the fascinating relationships between humans and caves over time, with a special focus on Mammoth Cave.

Cost: Free. Space is limited and reservations are required at 404.929.6400.
