UrbanWatch Atlanta Restoration Internship
Availability: Fall, 2007; Spring, 2008
Time Commitment: 5 – 15 hours per week
Academic Credit:
Each intern must provide verification that he/she is receiving academic credit for the internship prior to beginning the assignment. All Fernbank internships are unpaid positions
Major Job Functions:
- Attend necessary training sessions and read materials related to the program
- Become well versed in the local ecology of Fernbank Forest and the Piedmont region of Georgia
- Assist small school groups in an interpretive hike and restoration activities including removing invasive species (by hand and with tools) and planting native species; assist with orientation and supervision.
- Assist in scheduling and preparing for these group visits
- Assist in propagating native plant species
- Assist in seed collection, cleaning and sowing of seeds
- Assist with continued maintenance of restoration areas (watering, weeding, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Background and/or strong interest in restoration, botany, education (formal or informal), gardening, horticulture or interpretation in an outdoor setting
- Strong interest in working directly with student groups
- Good interpersonal skills
- Experience working with the public
- Willingness to learn about the program and study independently if necessary
- Compliance with Museum policies and procedures
- Must be able to work outdoors and walk/hike up to two miles and have physical skills necessary to perform restoration activities (involves some lifting, bending, digging, working with tools, etc.)
