Help Your Garden Survive Drought with Eco-Friendly Workshops at Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The drought in the Southeast has been a big concern for residents over the past year, and many are seeking ways to not only save water, but save their gardens. Fernbank Museum of Natural History has enlisted its environmental education team to help showcase some easy, tried-and-true ways to be friendly to the environment and allows the environment to return the favor.

The Museum will feature two upcoming make-and-take workshops to provide a fun, hands-on demonstration of natural ways to maintain your garden.

Native Plant Workshop
Sunday, March 30, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn about low-maintenance, drought-resistant plant species that are ideal for your home garden because they are specifically adapted to our region. Because these plants grow naturally in Georgia they require minimal attention and are great alternatives to other non-native, invasive species like English Ivy or Chinese Privet.

You'll also learn techniques for dividing trilliums during this workshop. A portion of the divisions will be planted on the grounds at the museum, while the rest will be for participants to take home to their own backyard. The cost of this workshop, led by Fernbank environmental educators, includes take-home plants to help jump start your garden.

Cost: Members: $25; non-members: $35. Registration and payment deadline is March 20. Space is limited. To register, call 404.929.6379 or e-mail programs@fernbank.edu.

Rain Barrels and Worm-Composting
Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Start spring the “green” way and learn a quick and easy way to collect rain water for your garden, helping decrease your water bill and feed your plants with an environmentally friendly gardening method during dry spells and drought.

Fernbank Museum’s environmental scientists also will guide you through the steps to make your own natural, chemical-free fertilizer from food scraps. Participants will leave with their own take-home “rain barrel and worm-composting kit.”

Cost: Members: $35; non-members: $50. Includes all materials. Ages 16 and up. Reservations are required by March 28.

Make reservations at 404.929.6379 or programs@fernbank.edu.
