Life After Hurricane Katrina: The Impact on Human Health and the Environment
Dr. Victor M. Ibeanusi, Chair Environmental Science and Studies, Spelman College

Hurricane on the Bayou features remarkable footage of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou before and after Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters in American history. More than a year later, the footprints left by the receded floodwater pose major environmental and human health risks for the city of New Orleans. Exposure to molds, fungi and other microbial spores left by the floodwater can cause a variety of symptoms that negatively impact one’s health, ranging from allergies to various other respiratory track infections. Following a screening of Hurricane on the Bayou in the IMAX Theatre, Dr. Ibeanusi will discuss the magnitude of this contamination and the extent to which these health concerns are being addressed.

About the Film: Hurricane on the Bayou is a large-format film offering a personal look at the impact Louisiana’s disappearing wetlands has on hurricane protections. Dive with baby alligators, dance to Cajun rock’n blues music and experience the force of a major hurricane as it rips through the city of New Orleans—all while learning first hand the importance of protecting this unique environment.

About the Speaker: Dr. Victor M. Ibeanusi, Chair Environmental Science and Studies, Spelman College, research focuses on the possible use of special microbes to remove toxic pollutants from our environment. He has chaired the international conference, Safe Water, since 2003.
