Reptiles Rule at Fernbank!
Reptiles and Amphibians Take Center Stage at Annual Reptile Day
ATLANTA—Leaping lizards! It’s Reptile Day at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. On Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., slither over to Fernbank Museum for an up-close encounter with an assortment of reptiles at Reptile Day. This special programming day offers visitors a unique opportunity to get to know these misunderstood creatures for what they really are—an amazing and beautiful part of the natural world.
An assortment of live reptiles and amphibians will be on display in the Museum’s Great Hall for this annual event. Members of the Georgia Herpetological Society and Fernbank scientists will be available to answer questions and educate guests on the importance of these animals. Lizards, snakes and tortoises are scheduled to be among the 30-40 different animals that will be part of the program; Handlers will walk around with select species to provide visitors a closer look. And, for the first time ever, Reptile Day will provide visitors with a chance to see venomous species.
Reptile Day is a chance for people to interact with and learn more about reptiles and amphibians. The program was developed by Fernbank Museum in partnership with the Georgia Herpetological Society in 2002 in an effort to educate the public on the beauty and importance of reptiles and amphibians. “It’s a great opportunity for people who might be afraid of reptiles to realize that these amazing creatures aren’t scary or threatening,” said Heather Heimmer, Biological Sciences Manager at Fernbank Museum of Natural History.
Last year’s event was a resounding success, with nearly 3,000 visitors getting up close and personal with some slithering, crawling and very cool critters.
Reptile Day is included with Museum admission and is free for Members. Museum admission is $12 for adults, $11 for students/seniors and $10 for children. To order tickets, call 404.929.6400. For more information, call 404.929.6300 or visit www.fernbankmuseum.org. The Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Fernbank is accessible from MARTA and free parking is available.
