Education Assistant

Job Summary
Education Assistants interact with children and families in a variety of Fernbank Museum's public programming, including exhibits, family event days and programs. 

Schedule: 
Fridays 10am-3pm, Saturdays 10am-3pm, Sundays 1pm-5pm, Mondays 10am-2pm (Extended hours on school holidays and special event days. Additional shifts may be available on an as-needed basis.)

Major Functions:

  • As Fernbank NatureQuest exhibit facilitator, greet guests, orient groups, maintain safe and attractive environment and assist guests with interactive components.
  • On family event days, assist with activity setup and facilitation.
  • In programs, facilitate hands-on children's activities based on a wide range of science and natural history topics.
  • Assist with preparations for educational programs.
  • Assist the Education Department with other tasks and duties as assigned. 

Experience Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with young children.
  • Strong customer service skills are required.
  • Previous public speaking experience and a basic knowledge of science are helpful.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Must enjoy working with children and families.
  • Excellent rapport with children and ability to communicate with parents.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to help out wherever needed; energetic and creative.
  • A self-starter able to work independently and see projects through to completion.
  • Must be comfortable around reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Animal handling and training may be available, depending on interest and needs of Museum.
  • Available to work weekends and holidays.

Member and Volunteer Services Associate Part-time

Position Summary
The Member and Volunteer Services Associate will assist with day-to-day operations of both the Membership and Volunteer Department. This includes but is not limited to running a register in the Museum lobby to assist with membership sales during peak periods throughout the year, membership date entry and scheduling weekly volunteer shifts. Additionally, he/she will be responsible for office management including ordering supplies (ie, office supplies, coffee, nametags) and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

Volunteer Department

  • Assist with daily volunteer rounds by making sure volunteers are in place at Greeter and IMAX® stations.  If volunteers are not in place by opening, please contact Security and the MSD Assistant Manager on duty.
  • Monitor volunteer calendars and fill volunteer shifts as needed.
  • Answers the volunteer phone line and follows-up with volunteer inquires.
  • Assists volunteers with IMAX® entry and exit on Lobby Level on an as needed basis.
  • Assists volunteers at the Greeter Station to ensure a continuous flow of traffic on an as needed basis.
  • Works in cooperation with Manager and Assistant Manager of Member and Volunteer services to coordinate field trips and special events for volunteers.
  • Follow-up with appropriate staff in regard to comments and suggestions given by volunteers.
  • Conducts volunteer orientations in cooperation with Assistant Manager of Member and Volunteer Services Associate.
  • Order coffee and supplies for volunteer lounge.
  • Order nametags.

Membership Department

  • Run register in the Museum lobby to assist in processing memberships.  During summer and peak holidays, this will be a regularly scheduled shift.  Otherwise this will be on an as-needed basis.
  • Enter membership data into Raiser's Edge.
  • Investigate card issues and follow-up with members whose cards have been returned (ex: lost cards, cards never received).
  • Support membership events including but not limited to exhibition opening day member breakfast, film premieres and the Winter Wonderland holiday event.

Part-time Museum Store Sales Associate

Job Summary: Responsible for the timely processing of all sales in an efficient and friendly manner. Contributes to the efficiency of the Store's daily operations and the creation of the proper atmosphere for a successful and profitable Store.

Major Functions:

  • Process all sales transactions quickly and accurately;
  • provide friendly, helpful service with good communication skills to allvisitors;
  • be knowledgeable about all items sold in the Store;
  • resolve register related problems;
  • work closely with all Store staff and volunteers to ensure maintenance of visitor service standards;
  • open and close the Store, including making daily deposits and reports.

Other Functions:

  • Maintain proper merchandise display, Store cleanliness and adequate
  • stock on hand;
  • aid in keeping Store management informed as to merchandise and supply
  • needs;
  • provide input regarding appropriate and timely solutions to conflicts and
  • problems;
  • make appropriate decisions in the absence of Store management;
  • help with taking physical inventory;
  • perform all other Store related functions as needed.

Requirements:

  • Flexible availability. Work schedule will include weekday and weekend hours.
  • High school diploma
  • Cash handling experience
  • Excellent customer service experience
  • 1-2 years experience in a retail environment

Visitor Services Sales Associate Full-time

Job Summary: The Visitor Services Sales Associates will generally be the first Fernbank Museum employee the visitor will encounter. It is therefore imperative that all employees in this department be polite, courteous and professional at all times. Sales Associates must always display a genuine concern for the needs of all visitors and must be willing to exhaust all efforts to ensure that each visitor has as enjoyable a visit as possible. Sales Associates must also possess the necessary skills for counting monies received as each agent is responsible for balancing sales and revenue at the end of the day.

Major Functions:

  • Selling the Museum, IMAX® Theatre, Museum memberships and any and all special exhibits that might be offered at the Museum
  • Providing accurate, professional and courteous service to each visitor
  • Answering questions and directing visitors as required
  • Maintaining knowledge of all current and future Museum activities

Experience Requirements:

  • Good Customer Service Skills
  • Flexibility in scheduling
  • Able to work week-ends/holidays
  • Experience in cash handling

Skills and Attributes:

  • Basic typing or keyboard experience
  • Good oral and written communication
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to interact well with visitors and co-workers
