First Georgians
Learn about some of Georgia's prehistoric human inhabitants in First Georgians.
This collection of artifacts drawn from each of the major cultural periods in Georgia's human past (Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Woodland, Mississippi and Historic) accompanies a timeline (10,000 BC- AD1700) that serves as a point of reference for discussions of political structure, subsistence and settlement patterns of Georgia's indigenous societies.
More to See!
A rare dugout canoe discovered in South Georgia's Satilla River is now on display March 1 in the First Georgians gallery. The 17 foot-long canoe, made from a longleaf pine tree more than 300 years ago, has been preserved through the collaboration of Fernbank archaeologists with concerned individuals, business interests, and government agencies. This unusual artifact gives Fernbank a unique opportunity to connect the story of Native American Indians with their natural environment.
