Homeschool Day
November 12, 2012
Immerse your child in a special day of hands-on learning adventures during Fernbank's Homeschool Day.
Choose from three educator-led programs, designed for different grade levels: Eco-Sleuths, Shoot for the Moon and Forest Explorers: Focus on Water. You can also enjoy a chance to socialize with other homeschool parents, experience the new special exhibition Genghis Khan or see an IMAX® film (additional ticket).
Program Options
Eco-Sleuths*
Grades 3-5 at 1pm
Grades K-2 at 2pm
Put on your ecologist hat by using your senses to observe nature around us! You will practice scientific observation skills through activities and exploration as you solve a mystery. Discover more about habitats—both the living and nonliving components—and gain a greater appreciation for the natural world.
Shoot for the Moon
Grades K-2 at 1pm
Grades 3-5 at 2pm
Soar through space during this program all about planets, stars and more. How old would you be on Mercury? How much would you weigh on Mars? Discover the true size differences between objects in our solar system and how far apart the planets are spread. Enjoy star story-telling as you learn about constellations and the stars within.
Forest Explorers: Focus on Water*
Grades 6-8 at 1pm
In this two hour session, students will hike to Fernbank Forest, an old-growth remnant of the ecosystem that used to dominate much of the southeast. Use scientific tools to examine the pond and streams within the forest. Discover the organisms that live in and rely on this water, and play a game to learn how macro invertebrates can reveal the health of a stream.**
Self-Guided Museum Tours
10am – 5pm
Explore the Museum at your own pace. Come face-to-face with the world's largest dinosaurs, explore the development of life on Earth through the landscapes of present-day Georgia, connect with cultures from around the globe, and engage in a variety of hands-on exhibitions and more!
Films in the IMAX® Theatre
Choose from two educational and entertaining films: Africa's Elephant Kingdom and To The Arctic. (Requires a separate ticket purchase.)
